i've allowed today's journal entry to be their list of current reading.
i have asked bernadette and myrddin - and bernadette especially - to set aside the "light books" they've already read. ie, set aside the famous five, boxcar children, animal ark series for the moment... myrddin has already done this. bernadette has not, and my request upset her very much.
ian and i explained to her that it is time to move on; she has been rereading these same books since she was 7. altho they are comfortable old friends, there are richer stories - enjoyable and interesting stories - available for her discovery. bernadette has been wanting me to continue the little house series (by laura ingalls wilder); i'd read the 1st book aloud to them several years ago. i suggested that she pick up reading the series herself. she also enjoys the chronicles of narnia; she may read through these books again in her "transition" to new reading adventures. bernadette has accepted this idea, and now has 2 narnia books and 1 little house book on her reading list.
myrddin, on the other hand, has about 6 books on her current reading list - books by elizabeth speare, c.s. lewis, susan cooper, and lloyd alexander. i've requested that she finish and "check" off most of those books before she moves on. both ian and i know how easy it is to read so many books that you forget to finish some stories. so, as a general rule: we've decided to keep our reading list down to 2-3 books at a time.
the girls are now practicing different "fonts" as they write down their reading lists.
i've told the girls that they may eventually begin their own blog journals when we have reliable internet - and their computer can go on-line again. for some reason, their computer's modem is not working properly and won't log on; not sure why.
almost noon. raewyn is begging for lunch.
